Long Overdue Update #2: Baby!

So there was the wedding, way back on the opposite side of the year in the sunny, green summertime. Here we are now in the depths of dark, cold winter, with piles of snow heaped all around and more falling almost daily. Amazingly, that's enough time for a tiny tadpole of a human to swell into a melon-sized baby, just 5 weeks away from our official due date.

5 weeks from now! That's mid-March, the point on the calendar we've been looking toward for months. Waiting, wondering, worrying a bit...preparing, anticipating, dreaming. A new little person will enter the world, our family will grow, our lives will be forever changed.

At 11 weeks, when the comparison chart told us our babe was just the size of a fig, we saw a grainy image on a computer screen, saw a little face and four limbs waving to and fro, saw the flicker of a tiny heart. What had been a small, not-quite-believable secret to us became, at that moment, as large as life, and real.

"The proof is in the pudding," we joked. "Figgy pudding." That's how we started calling our baby Figgy, and how we introduced this newest family member to our relatives and friends at the close of the first trimester.

Of course, Figgy now figures prominently in our plans and expectations. My belly is becoming quite prominent here in the home stretch, just for a start. Then there's the car seat in the living room, diapers cycling through prep cycles in the washing machine, piles of fabric and lists of sewing projects strewn around my office, a little sweater on the knitting needles.

There's lots more to say, even before baby arrives - and I can only imagine the photos and stories I'll want to share after that momentous day. I suspect that Michigandering might be about to see quite a bit more action again!
