The cherry blossoms are in bloom and the wineries on Old Mission Peninsula had a tasting tour last Saturday. Mom and Dad came down and we bought our souvenir glasses and made the rounds. There was a blustery spring chill in the air, but the views on the peninsula were gorgeous - the deep blue of Lake Michigan, green rolling hills, sky blue with perfect puffy clouds, and frothy white blossoms covering the trees.
Old Mission is a 20-mile-long, skinny finger of land that pokes out into Grand Traverse Bay, splitting it in half. The lighthouse-crowned tip crosses the 45th parallel, halfway between the equator and the north pole. The lake moderates the temperature, making it the perfect climate for growing fruit. Cherries, of course, both sweet and tart. Also apples and, more recently, wine grapes. Days like this - views like these - remind me why people come from far and wide to spend time in MY backyard! (So just let me know when you're coming!)
